Imagine an almost surreal space: several century-old maple trees with thick roots on the surface and water springing out of them. Only the gurgling of water disturbs the peace and tranquillity – these are the AMAZING MOKRINO SPRINGS. Inhabitants from the near-by village Mokrino traditionally gather here and celebrate the local holidays on the springs, in the facility build long time ago. The “Mokrino springs for eternity” project landscaped the area and the path leading to the springs and improved the facility. For the purpose of promoting the springs and the area around the springs, local inhabitants and members of the Environmental Association “Izvor” from Novo Selo printed promotional flyers.

About Mokrino and the Springs
Mokrino Springs are located on the Belasica mountain slopes 300 meters above the see level near the village of Mokrino. They are one of the biggest springs on this mountain, Çŕ Ěîęđčíî č čçâîđčňĺwith a capacity of 100 litres per second. The combination of this springs and the century-old maple trees roots the water springs from is very attractive. The village of Mokrino gained its name due to the many local springs (the name associates to “wet place”). Inhabitants traditionally organize picnics and celebrations under the shadow of the maple trees on Mokrino springs every Ilinden (2nd of August), offer sacrifice and organize traditional feast.
How to reach Mokrino?
Mokrino Springs are located on the mid-way of the road leading from Smolare to Kolesino. You can reach them from Strumica, passing through Bansko and Novo Selo. An asphalted road leads to the springs and makes them easily accessible by car. There is a bus line from Strumica to Mokrino, as well as vans from Strumica, Bansko and Novo Selo to Mokrino and the other villages several times a day.
Where to stay overnight?
There are three hotels in Bansko and this is the nearest hotel accommodation. You can stay also in the hotels in Strumica or look for a room in the village houses, or in the near villages of Smolare and Kolesino.
Local specifics
Agricultural production is very specific for this area. In the surrounding area of Mokrino, local inhabitants grow cherries, chestnuts, walnuts and watermelons with excellent quality and make various specialties (preserves, liqueurs, juices) from them. Local cuisine is delicious and rich in vegetables. You should visit the excellent restaurant “Panorama” in the vicinity of Mokrino, where traditional and very tasteful dishes are offered in the authentic ambience of old Macedonian house.
What can you see in the surroundings?
You can visit Smolare and Kolesino Waterfalls, then the Bansko Spa resort near by, the remains from the Roman thermal baths and the Monospitovo wetland, a remaining from the glacial age. You should not miss the opportunity to visit the monastery “Saint Eleusa” in the near village of Vodoca, from the 10th century. |
